Transforming Dreams into Reality: The Remarkable Journey of Emily Hikade

Emily Hikade

In the realm of entrepreneurship, paths are as diverse as the individuals who tread them. Such is the case with Emily Hikade, the visionary founder and CEO behind the esteemed luxury pajama brand, Petite Plume. Transitioning from a career as a CIA officer stationed abroad to helm her own fashion enterprise might seem unconventional, yet for Hikade, it was a pivotal shift towards fulfilling her dreams.

Reflecting on her journey, Hikade shares, “There is no ‘typical’ way to become an entrepreneur, and I think my trajectory reflects that.” This sentiment encapsulates her remarkable transformation from a government operative to a trailblazing businesswoman. Establishing Petite Plume in 2015 marked the beginning of a new chapter, one defined by passion, resilience, and unwavering determination.

Despite the stark contrasts between her previous role and her current venture, Hikade found surprising parallels. “In forging a new path entirely, it was obviously a huge career change with notable differences that would be expected,” she explains. “But it might surprise people the similarities. Being able to adapt my skills, knowledge, and training has led me to be better in business and navigate through some unexpected hurdles.”

The genesis of Petite Plume stemmed from a moment of profound clarity during a harrowing plane journey. Recalling the incident, Hikade reveals, “I was on a plane to a high threat meeting when the plane started to go out of control. The lights went out, people were screaming as the plane cascaded toward the water.” This near-death experience became the catalyst for her entrepreneurial aspirations. Inspired by her children waiting at home, Hikade resolved to create a brand that captured the timeless elegance of classic French pajamas for American families.

With meticulous planning and a willingness to adapt, Hikade embarked on her entrepreneurial odyssey. “When it comes to planning for business, and often in life, I think that it is so important to have a defined, structured and thorough road map for success,” she emphasizes. “On the flip side it’s just as important to be flexible, learn how to adjust the plan and overcome any obstacle, as anything could be around the corner.”

The fruits of her labor have been nothing short of extraordinary. Today, Petite Plume graces the shelves of renowned retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s, a testament to Hikade’s unwavering commitment to quality and style. Collaborations with esteemed brands like Minnow and M.M. LaFleur have further solidified Petite Plume’s status as a trailblazer in the fashion industry.

As Petite Plume enters its next phase of growth in 2024, Hikade remains steadfast in her vision. “We have exciting collaborations on the horizon, as well as expanding our bedding and home collection,” she reveals. “Bringing Petite Plume to life, from an idea to a reality, was all about taking the first step. I never dreamed we’d be where we are now and we’re just getting started.”

Looking ahead, Hikade envisions a future brimming with possibilities. “In 2024, Petite Plume is moving into the next stage of our growth, with incredible brand moments and milestones for the company,” she declares. “The possibilities are endless, as I couldn’t have predicted where I would be today when I started the business, and new doors of opportunity are opening every day.”
